Wales Family Beach Holidays - Rhyl, Prestatyn, North Wales Coast, Tenby, Porthcawl and Barry Island
Budget seaside family holidays in Wales don't get much better than Rhyl. Holiday makers have been coming here to Wales' holiday North coast for many years, and Rhyl pulls on both it's seaside history plus it's evolved with the times. You can still ride on a donkey on Rhyl's beaches (and the donkeys here have won awards!)- a timeless experience that kids love. Rhyl and slightly quieter neighbour Prestatyn offer four beautiful sandy beaches which stretch for 7 miles, and what's more Rhyl and Prestatyn Central beaches both have Seaside Awards for cleanliness and superb water quality. The indoor Sun Centre water complex at Rhyl offers a host of exciting rides, and a ride up to the top of Sky Tower for panoramic views of the area is a must.
Tenby does well as a Wales family holiday destination. Alongside it's beautiful sandy beaches which offer opportunities for watersports such as surfing, there are a selection of family holiday attractions in and around the town. Ocean Commotion Childrens Play Centre is very popular, situated conveniently near the town centre and beaches. Great for rainy days, inside the centre has slides, ball pools, aerial glides, a rope bridge, a parents zone and a family bar and restaurant. Keep it in mind if the weather turns! Two particularly great family attractions in Tenby are the Dinosaur Park and the Wild Animal Park at Manor House (see weblinks right for details). Walk along woodland trails and spot giant lifelike dinosaurs, or visit the Animal park for regular falconry displays and more. Pembrokeshire's main theme park, Oakwood is just 15 miles away from Tenby in Narberth.
Porthcawl on the Glamorgan Coast has it all! Situated on the sublime Glamorgan Heritage Coast, Porthcawl offers both an excellent base for South Wales family seaside holidays and great surfing at Rest Bay. For families the traditional seaside feel of Porthcawl is perfect. There's a big theme park here too - Coney Beach Pleasure Park. Further along the coast towards Cardiff you've another theme pleasure park at Barry Island.
Family Adventure Activity Holidays in Wales
Families who love activity holidays, especially water based sports, will love Pembrokeshire. Base yourself in Tenby and you'll have numerous family attractions close to hand including theme parks, boat trips and animal parks. See seals and dolphins on boat trips around Skomer or take a family boat trip to Ramsey Island or Caldey Island. Lots going on for families in Pembrokeshire, and attractions for kids of all ages. Look to the Pembrokeshire family holidays page on this website for family holiday attractions and activities in Pembrokeshire.
Best Family Activites for Holidays in Wales
Visit the Alice in Wonderland Centre in Llandudno, followed by a trip on the Great Orme Tram then a jaunt upto Llandudno's historic Victorian pier. Llandudno is perfect as a family holiday base, with two great beaches and plenty of attractions for all the family.
Take a trip on one of Wales' many steam railways. Llangollen is a good one for the kids - watch out for Thomas the Tank Engine. Other favourites include the Snowdon Mountain Railway (Wales' most popular attraction), and both the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways into Snowdonia.
Family holidays in Tenby on the South West Wales Pembrokeshire coast couldn't be better. A choice of superb sheltered beaches here, plus plenty of opportunity for family watersports and trips out to off shore island Caldey. There's a great choice of family holiday attractions all over Pembrokeshire, including numerous farm based parks where the kids can pet a sheep, and feed the ducks. Family horse riding and trekking along the miles of Pembrokeshire coast is also popular.
There's enough attractions in Cardiff Bay to keep the kids happy all day. Take your pick from boat trips, Techniquest interactive sciene museum, the Doctor Who exhibition and plenty going on in the Wales Millenium Centre. Other daytrip Welsh hotspots include a trip to the Rhondda Heritage Centre in the Welsh Valleys for a trip down Lewis Merthyr mine, a trip up the cliff railway at Aberystwyth (with pitch and putt golf at the top of Constitution hill, plus other kids attractions) and checkout the National Waterfront Museum at Swansea. There's enough knobs, buttons and interactive wot nots in here, bringing alive Welsh history, to keep the kids happy for hours!
Family Cycling Holidays Wales
Wales cycling trails are excellent, and numerous. One of the best family mountain bike hotspots is Afan Forest Park near Port Talbot in South Wales.
For gentle family cycling both Cardiff and Swansea offer good cycling trails - from Cardiff City centre up the Taff Trail, and from Swansea you can cycle on the gentle prom towards the Mumbles.
Cycling networks are excellent around the coast in Pembrokeshire, and checkout the 5 bike hubs in the Brecon Beacons at Brecon, Crickhowell, Talybont on Usk, Talgarth and Sennybridge. All are colour coded so you can pick the gentler ones for families.
See too the Millenium Coastal Park along the South Carmarthenshire Coast. The park stretches fro 20 kilometres, taking in the stunning coastline along the Burry estuary and Llanelli. Gentle cycling on the menu here for families, plus you can stop off at the superb Discover Centre (with baby changing facilities and numerous facilities including picnic tables). The National Wetlands Centre is adjacent to the Discovery Centre.
