Surfing In Wales Kite Surfing Windsurfing On The Welsh Coast UK

Pwllheli and Abersoch on the Llyn Peninsula are both hotspots for watersports, particularly surfing and windsurfing around Abersoch and further west on the Llyn south west facing Porth Neigwl beach or Hell's Mouth as it's known is the base for the British Surfing Association and Surf Shops/Schools. Surfing competitions are held here.

Checkout the surfing hotspots on the Ceredigion coastline including around New Quay and Borth. Head further south to Pembrokeshire, West Wales - an area in the UK renowned for it's favoured conditions for extreme watersports including surfing, kite surfing, windsurfing and coasteering. The Atlantic swell hit the Pembrokeshire coast full on, and combine this with superb clean waters and long golden sandy beaches and you have perfect conditions for surfing. See too Swansea's superb new indoor LC Waterpark with unique Surf Rider.

Pwllheli & Abersoch Surfing on the Llyn Peninsula

Pushing down towards the South Westerly area of the Llyn, particularly on Porth Neigwl beach otherwise known as Hell's Mouth, is where the surfing action is. Abersoch Surf School operates out of West Coast Surf Shop. Windsurfers tend to prefer Abersoch bay which is a bit more sheltered than Hell's Mouth.

Hell's Mouth is the famous 4 mile stretch of southwest facing beach near Llanengan. The best swells on the Llyn are here!

Pembrokeshire Surfing, Kite Surfing and Windsurfing

Take your pick from a choice of prime surfing beaches in Pembrokeshire, including Tenby South Beach, Freshwater West, West Dale Bay, St Bride's Bay, Broad Haven South, Newgale, Manorbier and perhaps the most popular beach for surfing - Whitesands Bay.

Freshwater West is renowned as the base for various surfing competitions. Other popular Pembrokeshire beaches for surfing include Poppit beach, West Dale beach, Abermawr, Abereiddy, Broad Haven South, and Freshwater East beach.

Like surfing, windsurfing is also popular on many beaches lining the Pembrokeshire coast. Hotspots include Poppit beach, Newport Sands, Cwm-Yr-Eglwys, Goodwick Sands, Whitesands Bay, Newgale, Broad Haven, Little Haven, Dale, Gelliswick, Neyland, Burton, Llangwm/Blacktar, West Angle Bay, Freshwater East, Lydstep Haven, Tenby South and Saundersfoot.

Plenty of choice then for windsurfing. You'll also find windsurfing is popular around Milford Haven where waters are more sheltered. Kite surfing is on the up and up around the Pembrokeshire coast, and on the beaches where windsurfing and surfing are popular, so too is kite surfing. Also popular is kite-landboarding - obviously by it's name land based. The base is a skate board as opposed to a surf board. Many of Pembrokeshire's endless flat sandy clean beaches are perfect for kite-landboarding as well as kite surfing.

Porthcawl Surfing Glamorgan Coast

Like surfing, love Rest Bay, Llantwit Major, Ogmore and Southerndown on the Glamorgan Coast.

Portcawl's golden sandy beach from Newton Bay on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast towards Sker Bay to the north of Porthcawl is prime surfing territory. Check the surfing weblinks right for details on surfing lessons and surfing tips in the area. There's a choice of surf schools offering surf equipment hire and surfing lessons. Rest Bay beach at Porthcawl is a blue flag beach and has a lifeguard station, toilets, adjacent car park and refreshment outlets on-site.

More surfing hotspots along the Glamorgan coast include Llantwit Major at Colhugh beach. Expect big swells here so beginner surfers are generally discouraged from this surfing location. Another surf hotspot is Dunraven Bay at Southerndown, particularly in winter when the waves come from a north easterly direction. Ogmore By Sea is a river mouth break, again popular in Winter for it's north easterly winds/waves.

Gower Peninsula Surfing Wales

Windsurfing, surfing and now kitesurfing are all popular watersports too on many of Gower's beaches.

For surfing Langland Bay, Caswell Bay and the northern end of Rhossili Bay are particularly favoured surf spots (see A1 surfing weblink right).

To the north edge of Rhossili at Llangennith discover the best surfing beaches (see PJ's Surfshop weblink right - the shop is in Llangennith). The village of Llangennith is attractive too, with a bohemian surfer scene edge.

Aberystwyth & Ceredigion Surfing Hotspots Wales

Facing the Atlantic full on, the Ceredigion coast framing Cardigan Bay offers some of the best surfing hotspots in the UK, notably rising surf star Borth beach north of Aberystwyth. (the sand is finer here at Borth compared to Aberystwyth).

The beaches of Mid Wales Ceredigion are long and sandg, offering constant all year round swells. It's laid back here too, retaining a remoteness away from the bustling summer crowds at Aberystwyth. The 3 mile sandy stretch fom Borth upto Ynyslas is a favoured surfing and kitesurfing spot.

Plenty of campsites in the Borth area, and a strong surf scene building. The Ynyslas Dunes and Nature Reserve back onto the beach here, enchancing it's appeal.
