Bridgend seems to be getting a bit of a contemporary name as a shopping hotspot due both to it's tempting shops lining the town centre's narrow pedestrianised only streets and the slightly out of town Bridgend Designer Shopping outlet. (see Bridgend's Designer Shopping Outlet's weblink right).

There's history and heritage here in Bridgend as well as contemporary temptations. Bridgend is an old market town dating from the 16th century. Pilgrims were in the habit of stopping here on there way to the shrine of the Patron Saint of Wales, St David, on the far western edge of Wales in Pembrokeshire. Bridgend was also a main tannery and weaving centre, and a producer of quality pottery. (you'll come across many a craft centre in the region).
It's thought Bridgend's name is derived from it's ancient old bridge which dates from 1425. Part of the bridge remains across the River Ogmore and it's a popular tourist attraction in the town, especially if you're interested in old pilgrim routes and trails.
The remains of Newcastle Castle sit up on the hill within the oldest part of Bridgend. It's an important conservation area - the castle is a Norman castle. Sublime views are up here on a clear day, plus other old buildings including a church and cottages. Rugby is big here too, note the Brewery Fields Rugby Ground. Push to the north of Bridgend and you're in more heritage iron and mining territory around Llynfi, Garw and Ogmore.
The Vale of Glamorgan, particularly around Porthcawl and Bridgend, has a superb choice of golf courses and makes the perfect Welsh location for golfing holidays. Many of Glamorgan's idyllic golf courses are located around the heritage coast - check out Royal Porthcawl Golf Club website right for one of the best coastal golf courses in the area. Overall South Wales is an excellent area for golf holidays.
