Cardigan Bay Tourist Information

Ceredigion combines a spectacular coastline crammed with a selection of Blue Flag beaches with stunning countryside around the Plynlimon mountain range. The Cardigan Bay Heritage Coast is a special area of conservation, a Marine Heritage Coast populated by around 130 bottlenose dolphins, porpoises and grey seals. Dolphin and seal watching boat trips are popular along this Welsh coastline, particularly from holiday mecca New Quay and Cardigan. Blue Flag beaches include Aberporth, Aberystwyth North and South, surfing hotspot Borth to the north near Ynyslas and New Quay and Tresaith. Many other beaches along Cardigan Bay have UK Seaside Awards or Green Coast Awards. The River Teifi is also rather popular for white water rafting, especially around Llandysul!

Walking in Ceredigion

Ceredigion and Cardigan Bay walking choices are diverse indeed, including spectacular coastal walking along the Ceredigion Coast Path to exploring the river valleys, estuary trails and nature reserves around the River Teifi.

The Ceredigion Coast Path stretches for around 50 miles and links two National Trust trails. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path hooks into the Ceredigion Coast Path at Cardigan, then weaves north upto Ynyslas and the Dyfi Estuary National Nature Reserve. Plenty of opportunity along the way to admire the Marine Heritage Coast here, and spot dolphins and seals! There's an excellent choice of linear walking routes in Ceredigion including currently the Borth to Devil's Bridge route and Aberaeron to Lampeter.

The Glyndwr's Way, an official National Trail since 2000 (weblink right), stretches 132 miles across Mid Wales. It's name is derived from Owain Glyndwr, a renowned Welsh warrior who fought for Welsh independence in the early 15th century. Beginning at Knighton on the England border, this path links with Offa's Dyke as well as weaving west into the Radnorshire Hills, along the Clywedog Reservoir, onwards to Machynlleth.

A number of important nature reserves are located in Ceredigion. Cors Caron, just north of Tregaron village, is one of the best examples of raised bog systems in the UK. Ynyslas is part of the sublime Dyfi Natinoal Natures Reserve (one of Wales' best!). Many flock to the stunning sand dune backed beach here at Borth. Alongside the River Teifi sits the Welsh Wildlife Centre and Teifi Marshes Nature Reserve (see weblink right for details). Best Beaches Cardigan Bay

Some of the cleanest and best of UK beaches are here on Cardigan Bay. Blue Flag beaches are numerous, including Aberporth, Aberystwyth's two beaches, Borth, Llanngrannog, New Quay and Tresaith. Many of the beaches here are beautifully remote, and away from the crowds. Surfers looking for a stunning quieter beach backed by dunes will love Borth beach.

Cardigan Bay beaches sit alongside pretty villages, ports and harbours. Like Aberporth, Tresaith and Llangrannog for example, or the stunning National Trust beaches of Mwnt and Penbryn.

The characters of Cardigan Bay's beaches is diverse too, ranging from the endless sands of beaches like Penbryn and Borth, to idyllic hidden cove beaches like Cilborth beach at Llangrannog (this stunning coastal stretch is owned by the National Trust).

Cycling Trails & Mountain Biking in Ceredigion

Cyclists and Mountain Bike enthusiasts have long been head to the many cycling trails and mountain bike trail challenges in Ceredigion. There's a superb choice of cycle trails at Bwlch Nant-yr-Arian Forest Recreation Centre in the heart of Mid Wales (also with award winning visitor centre and Red Kite Centre/weblink right).

No less than three areas in Ceredigion have been designated official Wales Cycle Break Centres - see the Ceredigion Cycling Breaks weblink right for details.

The Rheidol Cycle Trail stretches for 28km between Aberystwyth and stunning Devil's Bridge, and for dedicated long-distance cyclists checkout the Sustrans National Cycle Route 81, Lon Cambria running for 113 miles between Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth.

Fishing/Angling Ceredigion, Cardigan Bay

It's not just the Cardigan Bay coast that attracts anglers to this area of Wales, it's the selection of rivers here too including the Teifi, Aeron, Dyfi, Rheidol and Ystwyth.

Freshwater angling is prevalent on Ceredigion's rivers, with ample salmon, sewin and trout. ARound the seaward reach of the Teifi there's world renowned sewin fishing.

Coarse angling is also popular, and Cardigan Bay is well known for it's ample supplies of bass and black bream.

Cardigan Bay, Ceredigion Attractions & Activities

Top holiday attractions in Ceredigion include the spectacular narrow gauge Rheidol Railway which runs from Aberystwyth to the sublime Devil's Bridge where a nature trail leads to the awe inspiring 300ft waterfalls and 3 bridges which transgress a woodland gorge here. (there's a caravan park at Devil's Bridge if you fancy spending some time here - and who wouldn't!).

Cardigan Island just off the coast from Cardigan is a nature reserve and a popular attraction here is Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park. Great for all the family there's farm animals galore, plus this is the spot to view bottlenose dolphins, Atlantic grey seals, sea birds and harbour porpoises.
