Llandudno Tramway & Great Orme Nature Reserve

One of Llandudno's many unique features includes the charming Great Orme Tramway which has been whisking visitors up to Great Orme's summit (207m) since 1902. Back then it was considered an engineering marvel - today it still has that wow factor and it's the only remaining UK cable operated tramway to transgress UK roads.

The exhibition at Halfway Station traces the history of this funicular tramway. The trams themselves, each of which is named after a Saint?! Visitors should note they operate from late March to late October. Once at the top of the Great Orme summit expect spectacular panoramic views on clear days especially. Snowdonia, Anglesey and even the Isle of Man, the Lake District and Blackpool come into view up here. Great Orme is a nature reserve, frequented by butterflies (naturalists come up here to spot Silky Wave, Grayling and Silver-studded blue butterflies), rare flowers and the wild Kashmir goats (over 100 of them, initially introduced by Queen Victorian who donated the original pair).

The Great Orme Country Park is officially a designated Special Area of Conservation - a haven of wildlife up here waiting to be discovered from a variety of sea birds to numerous migrant birds such as Peregrine Falcons. Great Orme (Y Gogarth is derived from the Norse meaning sea serpent/worm and as well as a choice of wildlife and flora there's evidence of copper mining from as far back as the Bronze age. Stop at the Great Orme Mines halfway up the tram line (tel: 01492 870447, weblink right) and view the mining tunnels uncovered fairly recently, revealing prehistoric Bronze Age copper mines.

The Alice in Wonderland Centre, Llandudno

Kids (and adults!) will love the Alice in Wonderland Centre in Llandudno. You can find out more about Alice Liddell, and see photographs, at the Wonderland Centre.

The exhibition takes you through the Alice in Wonderland story, with life sized animated displays and personal stereo narration. There's a superb gift shop on-site too, selling Alice in Wonderland related gifts and models.

You can also find out more about the Alice Trail around Llandudno here at the Alice in Wonderland Centre. The Liddell family owned the house Penmorfa for 11 years until it was sold in 1872. The house is included in the approximately 50 minute trail. Other buildings include the church she went to and the renowned White Rabbit Statue, plus a trip down the Rabbit hole - not to be missed this during your visit.
