Denbigh Castle Information
Without doubt the sprawling fortress of Denbigh Castle remains dominates this historic North Wales market town. Denbigh (Dinbych in Welsh) actually means 'little fortress', and Denbigh Castle was part of King Edward I's ring of castles in North Wales (others include Rhuddlan Caste, Beaumaris Castle and Flint Castle). This medieval town, with looming castle built to intimidate the locals up high on a hilltop, has a long history. Denbigh got it's borough charter in 1290 - it was contained in it's walls at that time. Later however it was burnt to the ground during the War of the Roses and relocated around today's Denbigh marketplace.

Denbigh Tourist Guide
Denbigh makes a good central base for easy access into Snowdonia National Park, or pushing north towards the North Wales holiday coast. A Welsh castle market town, Denbigh is also home to a nice selection of lively pubs, many of which have weekly live music affairs ranging from folk to jazz to soul. It celebrates it's love for live music annually with the Denbigh Mid-Summer Festival usually running from around the 20th to 24th June.
There's a bohemian undercurrent here too, with a preference for a holistic way of life. A holistic festival also takes place annually in the town as does a beer festival.
Checkout the little Denbigh local theatre on Station Road, and a choice of fresh produce specialist shops in the town.

Did you know Henry Stanley, (the guy who was sent out to find David Livingstone in Africa and immortalised for the words of greeting when they finally met in 1871 near Lake Tanganyika, 'Dr Livingstone I presume), was born here in Denbigh! Well I never!
Denbigh Castle North Wales
Push up from the High Street in Denbigh towards the castle (not for the faint hearted as it's a bit of a climb, but well worth the effort). Once at the top you can expect panoramic views of the Vale of Clwyd.
There is thought to have been a Welsh fortress up here at the beginning of the 13th century (run by the Princes of Gwynedd). Nothing is left of this original fort now, and the impressive ruins you see today were built on the orders of Edward I over rather a long period of time - this castle was constructed in bits from around 1295 well into the 1400s.
Some fascinatingly detailed carvings survive at Denbigh (see the corbels on the Green Chamber walls). Check the Castles of Wales weblink right for a complete history and guide.
