Denbigh Vale of Clwyd Ruthin Denbighshire

Denbighshire and the pretty Vale of Clwyd are ancient Welsh market town territory. One of the best social history attractions in Wales is in Ruthin - don't miss a visit to Ruthin Goal, side of the last UK execution in 1903.

Denbigh Castle is part of Edward I's North Wales ring of castles. You're close to both Snowdonia National Park and the North Coast holiday resorts based in either of these two Denbighshire hotspots.

Ruthin Denbighshire North Wales

Sitting in the pretty Vale of Clwyd in the heart of Denbigshire, Ruthin (Rhurthun) is a delightful medieval town.

Ideal as a central base for exploring Snowdonia National Park to the West, the holiday North Coast of Wales and stunning Powys to the south, if you like being out and about exploring different areas of Wales consider Ruthin. There's some fascinating attractions in the town itself including St Peter's Church dating from 1310 and Ruthin Goal where the very last execution took place in 1903. There's some stylish specialist shops, pubs and chic restaurants here in Ruthin too.

Denbigh & Denbigh Castle, Denbighshire North Wales

Without doubt the sprawling fortress of Denbigh Castle remains dominates this historic North Wales market town.

Denbigh (Dinbych in Welsh) actually means 'little fortress', and Denbigh Castle was part of King Edward I's ring of castles in North Wales (others include Rhuddlan Caste, Beaumaris Castle and Flint Castle). This medieval town, with looming castle built to intimidate the locals up high on a hilltop, has a long history.

Denbigh got it's borough charter in 1290 - it was contained in it's walls at that time. Later however it was burnt to the ground during the War of the Roses and relocated around today's Denbigh marketplace.
