Dee Valley Walking, The Dee Valley Way and Offa's Dyke

Walking in the Llangollen area couldn't be better. The Dee Valley Way fruns fro 15 miles between Corwne and Llangollen. It's a superb marked trail this one, and easy to dip into. Check the Dee Valley Walks weblink right for maps of the Dee Valley Way to download. This splendid trail passes practically all the main attractions in the area, including passing through Castle Street in Llangollen town centre, and passing Valle Crucis Abbey, the ancient Dinas Bran Castle and Iron Age fort. On the Corwen stretch the trail largely runs parallel with the River Dee. This is a good place to dip into the trail for a gentle riverside walk!

You can combine a trip on the Llangollen Railway and hop off at Berwyn for the walk to Horseshoe Falls. You can walk back to Llangollen from Horseshoe Falls too (2 miles) along the easy Shropshire Union Canal towpath running alongside the River Dee. Horseshoe Falls is certainly on the Thomas Telford trail! It's a semicircular weir designed by Telford himself in 1806. It's function was to provide water to the Llangollen branch of the Shroppie (Shropshire Union Canal).

What Telford forgot to consider was that the canal needed a heck of a lot of water - in fact it took such enormous amounts via Horseshoe Falls that it depleated the River Dee's water supply to the extent that several mills along the river went bust.

Keen walkers visiting the area will be aware that the north/south Wales Offa's Dyke Path passes just 1 mile outside of Llangollen (conveniently past Chirk Castle). Llangollen then serves as a superb base for either passing walkers on the Offa's Dyke National Path, or for a longer base and dipping into this path and the Dee Valley Way. Llangollen's Tourist Information Centre on castle street has a huge selection of walking maps and guides on the surround area and on both Offa's Dyke and the Dee Valley Way.
