Haverfordwest Tourist Information

Haverfordwest makes a great base for cycling holidays. The town has cycle hire outlets (see Mike's Bikes weblink right), and you're not far from the scenic Celtic Cycle trail and the Preseli Hills to the north if you're based here. Attractions within the town include the informative Haverfordwest Town Museum with adjacent Haverfordwest Castle. Down to earth in it's character, more people in Pembrokeshire live here than anywhere else. A good base to absorb the real day to day Pembrokeshire, Haverfordwest is the administrative centre of Pembrokeshire with superb transport links in and out of the town.

Haverfordwest History & Town Guide

Not the biggest town in Pembrokeshire, but the most populous, Haverfordwest is the central administrative hub of this region of Wales. Close to the Celtic Trail, and a good central Pembrokeshire base for access north upto the Preseli Hills and west towards St Brides Bay, Haverfordwest has one of the best local history museums in Pembrokeshire, plus there's Haverfordwest Castle too!

The town centre has an array of shops and a pleasant converted quay (Haverfordwest was once a thriving port at the end of the river estuary). A bustling, busy town there are plenty of restaurants, accommodation, pubs and cafes here.

As well as the Medieval Castle and museum the ruins of an Augustinian Priory sit alongside the river, another sign of Haverfordwest's ancient history. For Pembrokeshire Wales Golf Courses Haverfordwest is one of the best (see the Pembrokeshire Golf page on this website for details).

Haverford West Town Museum & Haverfordwest Castle

If you're a lover of local history museums, then Pembrokeshire certainly doesn't disappoint. What you'll notice after visiting some of the museums around the area is a strong focus on Civic local history, particularly here in administration Pembrokeshire centre Haverfordwest. The tone is firmly celebratory in the Haverfordwest Town Museum, which outlines how the town has had Mayors here as far back as the Middle Ages. Note the Mayoral robes on display.

Local trade and industry is given attention in the museum, including the big Marychurch Iron Foundry on Bridge Street which employed huge numbers of people in the town at one time. This iron foundry specialised in agricultural implements and decorative iron work for gates and doors.

Haverfordwest Castle is nowhere near as intact as Pembroke Castle, but it has an interesting history nonetheless. Both King Richard II and Oliver Cromwell visited here - you can see copies of Oliver Cromwell's letters ordering the destruction of Haverfordwest Castle on display in the museum. One of the main functions of this Welsh castle over the years has been as a prison. Find out more in the museum and view a number of prison artefacts including leg irons, locks and an original cell door.
