Tourist Information Pembroke Castle and Dock

Moving around the coast from Tenby, to Pembroke Dock and Pembroke with it's renowned castle, birthplace of Henry VII there's much ado. On the edge of the estuary visitors have easy access to excellent windsurfing territory especially around Milford Haven. Pembroke's largely intact looming castle is a must visit in the area, and one of Wales' most interesting castles. Take time to explore the history of Pembroke Dock. There's a Pembroke Dock trail and gun tower museum. Royal navy ships and Royal Yachts were once made here. Dock workers endured much hardship here after 1926 when shipbuilding declined.

Pembroke Castle is the oldest castle in West Wales, and a major attraction due in large part to it's intact state and it's claim as the birthplace of Henry VII. An unmissible Welsh Castle indeed.

Pembroke Tourist Information, Pembroke Dock & Attractions

The Gun Tower Museum on Pembroke Dock (see weblink right) is a good place to start to explore the fascinating history of Pembroke Dock. Shipbuilders in Pembroke constructed no less than 263 vessels for the Royal Navy including battleships and the Royal Yachts Victoria and Albert I, II and III. Closure of the yards after 1926 and the General Strike saw mass unemployment in the area, after which many workers left the area. Since 1979 Pembroke Dock is the site for ferries to Rosslare in Ireland. Take the Pembroke Dock Trail, taking in interesting historical buildings such as the Mechanics Institute on Dimond Street dating from 1862.

Pembroke town has a different character to Pembroke Docks. Main Street, Pembroke's only main high street is crammed with Georgian and Victorian buildings, culminating in the striking Pembroke Castle and Castle pond at Westgate Hill.

Pembroke Castle, Birthplace of Henry VII

Beautifully set on the banks of the estuary, and largely intact, Pembroke Castle is one of the most popular castles in the UK. It's recognised as being the seat of power for the Tudor dynasty - King Henry VII was born here in 1457. The castle itself dates from 1093 and it was heavily attacked during the Civil War. Pembroke Castle's keep is of particular interest, largely intact and dating from 1200, you can walk all the way to the top for splendid views via steps.

Turner painted the castle in 1829/30 (currently at the Holburne Museum of Art in Bath - weblink right). There's lots to explore including the dungeon Tower, the Northern Hall and numerous passages. School tours and groups are welcome, and you can book your guided tour via the website right. Pembroke Castle Events run mostly in the summer season from May to September and include everything from fighting kights to full drama performances in the grounds (Shakespeare seems rather popular). Check the webslite right for a full list of this year's events.

Exhibition rooms guide you through the history of this historic Welsh Castle, and visitors can take a picnic in the grounds and walk along the estuary. Kids will love the Brass Rubbing Centre. A gift shop and snack bar are on-site and you can walk around the medieval town walls and millpond to boot. A great day out for all the family, historically informative with a huge element of fun and interactions for kids!
