Castle Walk around Pembroke Castle, PembrokePembrokeshire West Wales has numerous castles, some of which like Manorbier Castle are situated on the coast. Visit the superbly intact Pembroke Castle, birthplace of Henry VII, or even get married in pretty Picton Castle.
Haverfordwest Castle & Haverford West Town Museum, Haverfordwest, SA612EF. Tel: 01437 763087. A 12th century castle which is centrally placed in the town. The museum sits adjacent. A considerable amount remains of the castle, despite Cromwell having a go - his orders for destruction of Haverfordwest Castle are on display in the museum. (see weblink right for details)
Carew Castle & Tidal Mill, Carew, Nr Tenby, SA70 8SL. Tel: 01646 651782. (weblink right). Carew Castle is one of Wales' most striking castles, situated as it is alongside a millpond and dating from the Norman period. Later in like it became an Elizabethan country house, but it was heavily pounded during the Civil War. Nearby is Carew Tidal Mill which is thought to date from 1542. Check the Carew Castle website right for a list of events and activities which take place through the year including costume activities for children and Medieval Market activities. Also on-site is a stunning 11th century Celtic Cross, a medieval bridge and plenty of space for picnics. You can walk around the castle on the mile roundwalk.
Cilgerran Castle, Cilgerran, SA43 2SS. Tel: Cadw - 01443 33 6000. (see CADW website right). Situated in a wooded gorge, Cilgerran Castle is particularly picturesque.
Llawhaden Castle, Llawhaden, SA678HL. Tel: 01443 33 6000. (see CADW weblink right). Originally dating from the 12th century, but rebuilt in the 14th, Llawhaden Castle was the palace fort of the Bishops of St Davids.
Manorbier Castle, Manorbier, SA70 7SY. Tel: 01834 871394. Manorbier Castle is situated right on the coast just above Manorbier beach.
Pembroke Castle, Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, SA71 4LA. Tel: 01646 684585. (weblink right). The largely intact Pembroke Castle sits on the banks of the river estuary. This is a particularly popular Welsh Castle as it's notable as being the birthplace of Henry VII. A medieval marvel indeed, Pembroke Castle is a superb day out for all the family, exploring the many tunnels and rooms. Exhibits and a gift shop are on-site.
Picton Castle & Woodland Gardens, Rhos, Nr Haverfordwest, SA62 4AS. Tel: 01437 751326. (see website right) Pretty Picton Castle and surrounding woodland gardens dates from the 13th century and has been in the hands of the Philips family over the years. Today as well as visiting, you can get married or hold your conference here!
