Pembrokeshire Surfing Windsurfing Coasteering Climbing in Wales UK

Welcome to Pembrokeshire, West Wales - an area in the UK renowned for its favoured conditions for extreme watersports including surfing, kite surfing, windsurfing and coasteering. Why is it so perfect? Well, the Atlantic swell hit the Pembrokeshire coast full on, and combine this with superb clean waters and long golden sandy beaches and you have the perfect conditions for surfing particularly. Waves that hit the Pembrokeshire coast have travelled far across the Atlantic ocean. Unobstructed South West facing beaches on the Pembrokeshire coast have the most powerful rollers, whereas more sheltered south east facing beaches are more sheltered (the slightly more sheltered beaches are favoured by windsurfers).

Other popular sports in Pembrokeshire include climbing, particularly on the south coast limestone cliffes - checkout Huntsman's Leap! If you fancy exploring the Pembrokeshire coast at sea level, combining climbing with plunging into the sea, then coasteering is the new exciting way to do it! Favourite spots for coasteering include Stackpole Quay in South Pembrokeshire and St Non's near St Davids. Plenty of opportunity for cycling and mountain biking around Pembrokeshire too, and how about a spot of diving around Skomer marine Nature Reserve, Ramsey Island or the wrecks around Milford Haven. Pembrokeshire also benefits from numerous bridleways for horseriding, plus if you've ever dreamed of horseriding along a flat endless sandy beach, then Pembrokeshire is where to do it!

Not surprising that Pembrokeshire offers such good surfing conditions around its coastline. It's exposed out here in the Far West of Wales. Freshwater West is renowned as the base for various surfing competitions. Other popular Pembrokeshire beaches for surfing include Poppit beach, West Dale beach, Abermawr, Abereiddy, Broad Haven South, and Freshwater East beach.

Pembrokeshire Windsurfing and Kite Surfing Holidays Wales

Like surfing, windsurfing is also popular on many beaches lining the Pembrokeshire coast. Hotspots include Poppit beach, Newport Sands, Cwm-Yr-Eglwys, Goodwick Sands, Whitesands Bay, Newgale, Broad Haven, Little Haven, Dale, Gelliswick, Neyland, Burton, Llangwm/Blacktar, West Angle Bay, Freshwater East, Lydstep Haven, Tenby South and Saundersfoot. Plenty of choice then for windsurfing. You'll also find windsurfing is popular around Milford Haven where waters are more sheltered. Check the websites listed right for windsurfing equipment hire and windsurfing lessons. Many activity outlets offer a range of watersports courses which include windsurfing, kite surfing and surfing.

Kite surfing is on the up and up around the Pembrokeshire coast, and on the beaches where windsurfing and surfing are popular, so too is kite surfing. Again, check the Pembrokeshire watersports outlets right for details. Kite surfing is essentially a coming together of surfing and windsurfing. A kite like structure pulls you along on your surfboard like base. Kite surfing has been growing considerably as a favoured extreme watersport. The bigger the kite is, the stronger the power of the pull, and learning to control the kite, often on the sands first before the sea, is how you learn. Expert kite surfers (watching them is fun if you get the chance) are soon jumping waves and powering along the Pembrokeshire coast.

Also popular is kite-landboarding - obviously by it's name land based. The base is a skate board as opposed to a surf board. Many of Pembrokeshire's endless flat sandy clean beaches are perfect for kite-landboarding as well as kite surfing. Boards for kite surfing and kite landboarding can vary in size to suit the individual. Both are extreme sports requiring a high level of skill, so beginners are well advised to seek kite surfing lessons before heading out. Professional tuition from one of the many activity centre around Pembrokeshire (see weblinks right for details) is essential - there's a technique here to learn.

Windsurfers will love Milford Haven's natural harbour, one of the biggest in Europe it stretches 13 miles. The waters are sheltered and clean, as well as traffic free, offering perfect conditions for practicing windsurfing techniques. Beginner windsurfers should head here in Pembrokeshire. Newgale beach stretches for 2 miles and is particularly popular with windsurfers, being slightly sheltered by the Marloes Peninsula. Broad Haven too has less of a high surf and benefits from safe shallow aters, so is better for windsurfing. Other windsurfing hotspots include particularly Tenby South beach which is more protected, wide, long and south east facing, so there's less of those full on Atlantic breakers here.

Pembrokeshire Horse Riding Along the Beach Wales

Coasteering Pembrokeshire Wales Coast

What is coasteering and why is it so popular here on the Pembrokeshire coast I hear you cry! Well, Coasteering for a start is certainly for the daring, in an organised group. You'll need to be pretty fit. Basically it's climbing and strong swimming all in one. You climb along the cliffs at sea level (of which many line the coast of Pembrokeshire), then when you can't climb any further and run out of suitable cliff face, you jump into the sea and swim around to the next bit of climbing cliff face. Not for the faint hearted!!!!!

Coasteering really is the latest watersports come climbing craze to appeal to many here around the Pembrokeshrie coast. Various activity centres including Preseli Venture (see weblink right) offer training and beginners are welcome. You'll end up cligg jumping, rock climbing, swimming into sea caves and exploring the Pembrokeshire coast at sea level, which some reckon is the best and most exhilerating way to do it!

The emphasis in Coasteering is on cliff jumping, wave dodging and rock traversing. Favoured coasteering spots include St Non's near St Davids, the Pencaer peninsula with it's wild coastline and Stackpole Quay in South Pembrokeshire. You're well kitted up by your chosen activity centre trainer, and equipment will include wetsuit, helmet and buoyancy aid.

Coasteering is a real adventure activity and can be a dangerous extreme sport, so you need to have proper equipment and training, and undertake an organised session with an officially recognised activity centre. See the list below, and weblinks right for details: Pembrokeshire Activity Centre, Cleddau Reach, Pembroke Dock. Tel: 01646 622013. Preseli Venture, Parcynole Fach, Mathry. Tel: 01348 837709.
