Views across the bay from Tenby CastleTenby or Dinbaych Y Pysgod, 'Little Fort of the Fishes' is the Welsh name for seaside haven Tenby with it's attractive Georgian seafront. Popular with walkers and families alike, the Pembrokeshire National Coast Path runs through Tenby - so if you're looking to hook into the National Coast Path then Tenby makes a superb base. In the 18th century European travel was restricted due to the Napoleonic Wars and Tenby benefitted, becoming a fashionable seaside location. It continued to grow as a tourist destination through the 19th century and railway links to the area. Today Tenby retains it's chic roots - it has an artistic edge, Augustus John (1878-1961) was born here in Tenby.
Holiday attractions abound in the town including Tenby Castle, Tenby Museum and Art Gallery and an annual arts festival. Take a boat trip to offshore Caldey Island and enjoy superb surfing conditions on Tenby South beach. Great beaches, historic buildings, museums and Georgian architecture all make Tenby a special location within Pembrokeshire. A popular Welsh holiday destination it remains! Tenby does well as a Wales family holiday destination. Alongside it's beautiful sandy beaches which offer opportunities for watersports such as surfing, there are a selection of family holiday attractions in and around the town. Ocean Commotion Childrens Play Centre is very popular, situated conveniently near the town centre and beaches. Great for rainy days, inside the centre has slides, ball pools, aerial glides, a rope bridge, a parents zone and a family bar and restaurant. Keep it in mind if the weather turns!
Two particularly great family attractions in Tenby are the Dinosaur Park and the Wild Animal Park at Manor House (see weblinks right for details). Walk along woodland trails and spot giant lifelike dinosaurs, or visit the Animal park for regular falconry displays and more. Pembrokeshire's main theme park, Oakwood is just 15 miles away from Tenby in Narberth.
Tenby's Silent World Aquarium & Reptile collection (weblink right) is another superb family attraction in Tenby. Located within a 19th century Chapel, this aquarium urrs towards a focus on local marine life around the Pembrokeshire coast. Alongside local marine life are colourful sea horses and various amphibians and exotic reptiles. Another good rainy day Tenby attraction.

Highly recommended is Tenby's little museum and art gallery, with it's focus very much on local history - particularly maritime. The art galleries have some work on display by some prestigious Welsh artists, notably Augustus John who was born here in Tenby and become renowned for his uncompromising portraits (not all his subjects were happy with his portrails!).
Move to the Maritime Gallery and discover just what an important part the sea has played in Tenby's history. The history of the lifeboat in the town is one of the subjects explored, as well as a favourite with the kids - the history of piracy! Shiver me Timbers, did you know Caldey Island is rumoured to have once been a favourite haunt for pirates! Check the Tenby Museum and Art Gallery's website right for more details.
There's many a historical building in Tenby, particularly in the Old Tenby part of the town. Georgian houses abound, most of which are now rather deluxe hotels. The oldest of all the buildings in Tenby are on Quay Hill and the old Tudor Merchant's House, now restored, is open to the public and interestingly recreates the atmosphere of family life in the Tudor period. (see the National Trust weblink right for details). Check out the 15th century St Mary's Chruch in the town as well as of course Castle Hill and the Norman Tenby Castle.
